At that time, everywhere in Flanders, there was nothing but war and talk of war. One day, the army of the king appeared, throwing villagers and animals into a panic :

“Ho there, peasants, the kingdom needs your gold”. Ransacking hovels and granaries from top to bottom, they surprised a young peasant girl carrying a load of barley. “Tell me, my dear, where can we find the village’s treasure?"

Shrugging off her fears, the young girl replied : “The treasure? You are tearing the village apart. These bags of barley are our only treasure and if you spare the village, I will reveal its secrets to you. From these grains of barley, I will make a drink that will make you famous”.

The young girl with golden hair then took the lid off a barrel and drew a large ladleful of artisanal beer. "Taste that” she said. The horseman took a sip. “In faith, what is that ?" ”That’s my very own malt beer made out of barley grain."

The story came to the ears of the king: “What’s the name of this girl?" asked the king. “I don’t know your highness”.

”Give me my golden seal. From now on this queen will be called : MALTESSE".
